New Year, Same Me, Better Goals

Taking a break, enjoying the lake

2021… I honestly don’t know if I have anything worthy to add to the chit chat about how difficult 2021 was for so many I love. The tragic and unexpected death of my daughter aside, it was challenging and soul crushing for me on oh so many levels. So, let’s just let me leave that acknowledgment as it is, shall we?

What about 2020? Well, I survived a pandemic amidst my middle son’s two surgeries compounded by many other challenges. I even tried to ‘retire’ #TheHealthyHabitLady blog and social media. Yeah well … that didn’t work out … folks wanted their cheerleader back; and I needed to be back. But there is nothing wrong with breaks, nothing at all.

Anyone remember 2019? That was the year I survived a devastating divorce and dissolved a 26 year marriage, lost my home, was financially obliterated and started all over, with my children, in a small town here in Northeast Texas. I traded in suburbia and city life for 13 acres on a lake. Zero regrets. Then menopause hit me. Oh Joy.

Guess what? I’m still here, I have survived, my heart is still beating and my blessings they do abound. Now I think I’d like a year to THRIVE … and not just survive. Anyone else?

Regardless of tragedies and sucker punches, I have had a few wins! Truly, I have… and I intentionally wrote them down in a journal by Mel Robbins … in my very own messy handwriting … to reflect and remind myself that YES, I AM STILL HERE. I’m still breathing and I do actually still have something to offer to those around me. I still have a voice. I still have something to say. I still have children to raise. I am 52 years young. I am far from done.

It is so important to celebrate your wins, and I hope you take a moment to honor anything that you accomplished in 2021, or even in the last few years. No matter how small .. it does matter. Write out your top 5, maybe it’s just barely a top 3 …. but I double dog dare you to do a little dance! Articulate your gifts and greatness into any flimsy words you can manage to string together. Building on that sense of accomplishment helps you with this next step … which is to plan your 2022! Be present in 2022! Engage in 2022!

Now I will whisper in your ear … drown out the distracting noises. If only for a moment, ignore the dog barkin’ and listen with intent. Here’s the question: Have you set any goals for this year? Not resolutions. GOALS?! Do you use a journal or a planner? I’d love to hear about your tools.

Now comes the most important question: Have you mapped out any strategies and action steps needed to accomplish desired goals? My brutal truth is this: YES, I have started ~~but I haven’t finished. My brain is still churning, my gears are still turning. Yes, Ms. Deb is still crafting and prioritizing, but I’m doing it ~ nonetheless.

My emotional bandwidth and mental energy are growing stronger, so let me hear from ya! How can we be here for each other throughout this year? Who can YOU reach out to this week; whether to ask for help or offer encouragement? Who can you check on and remind them that – yes – they matter? Who can you impress, even if it is just yourself? Who can you shock the hell out of this month? Now go on, get busy.

As for me and my mirror, we are good pals. Come tomorrow morning, when I see the rising woman whom I will greet with a ‘good morning‘ … when I see her in that gloriously flawed yet marvelous reflection … that woman will get a High 5! She deserves it, and so do you, my friend, so do you.

Comfort

I created a photography challenge for myself, and a few friends are participating.  Today’s category is ‘comfort’.  Taking a picture for this challenge inspired a whole domino effect chain reaction type sequence of thoughts, which ran me down a rabbit hole.  Surely you have had similar happen to you at some point.

My first thought was, menopause is a bully.  I realize I am getting off easy in many respects of menopause, but nonetheless I do not enjoy hot flashes.  Not even a little bit.  As I searched my brain for inspiration to take a picture of ‘comfort’, I landed on the idea of a fan.  My mind was spinning about creativity and photography but my body was screaming ‘go jump in ice’.  Not really; but you get the vivid idea.  SO I played around with my phone and selfies, with a fan, and the picture below is my result.  You may not even be able to tell it is a fan in the photo; but it is and it was turned on.  I was allowing myself a momentary pause from my tasks to cool off and feel some comfort.

Now back to the rabbit hole. Comfort is an amazing thing.  Everybody likes to be comfortable, yes?  I do enjoy air conditioning, no lie.  I enjoy indoor plumbing as well. We all have modern day comforts that make our lifestyles more pleasant.   Some things we could live without, some would perhaps present a hardship.   Right now, my dryer is broken.  This is NOT fun.  However; it has caused me to get out of my routine and as I’ve done that, growth has occurred.

My point is this.  I know it sounds cliche, but life exists outside of your comfort zone.  There is no growth in your comfort zone.  I often tell my kids that they are not entitled to be comfortable 100% of the time.   I usually find myself spouting off those words as they are fighting over the A/C vents in the minivan.

I dare you to get uncomfortable.   Do something different.  If you are sleepwalking through life, stop that.  Wake up.  Shake things up.  Just imagine all of the amazing growth, lessons and rude awakenings that exist outside your cozy space.

How Is Your Thinkin’?

BitmojiHmmmmWhat do you think of this?

Fear less, hope more; Eat less, chew more; Whine less, breathe more; Hate less, love more …

and all good things are yours.

 And with that in mind …

***By Changing Your Thinking***

By Changing Your Thinking,
You change your beliefs;

When you change your beliefs,
You change your expectations;

When you change your expectations,
You change your attitude;

When you change your attitude,
You change your behavior;

When you change your behavior,
You change your performance;

When you change your performance;
You Change Your Life!

And like I always tell my children …

Whether you think you CAN or think you CAN’T …
you are probably right.

Words

The most important words we will ever utter are those words we say to ourselves, about ourselves, when we are by ourselves….

God spoke the world into existence.

J.K. Rowling spoke the world of Harry Potter into existence.

What are you speaking into existence?

Words mean things.

Thoughts lead to actions.

Reading and watching and immersing yourself into something leads to your thoughts.

Control your input to control your output.

My son drew this picture below for me.  I am a horrible domestic engineer and honestly rarely sweep (kids do that).  Thus,  I have no idea why there is a broom in my hands,  but I love how he drew a cell phone to my ear.  I clearly speak a lot of words, ALL of the time. Yes, I can be chatty.  Especially during placement season working our foreign exchange student program. Spring and Summer are always super busy for me matching kids from around the world with volunteer host families.  It is my hope and sincere intention that the words we speak to these kids, in our homes, enrich and add to their experiences, as much as they add to and enrich OUR lives in the process.

Who can you speak life to today?  Who can you encourage?
Even if it is yourself.  Do it.

Carry On ~ Be vigilant. Keep the faith.

Core Values

What are your core values? Do you even know? Pick FIVE things that are super duper important to you. It doesn’t matter what they are – there is no right or wrong answer. Some people list things like God, Family, Financial Security, Education, Civil Rights, The Environment, Animal Welfare, Holistic Living, Status, Politics, Power … those are just examples … it can be anything that is intrinsically important to your every day life here on Earth. Be brutally honest about this. If you do not know what your top 5 core values are, pick at least 3 … but five is the goal.  Think about it, pray about it if you’re inclined to do so, but don’t take too long.  Usually the first things that pops into the brilliant head of yours are pretty close to the answers you seek.

NOW … once you figure out what these ever elusive core values actually are … align your daily activities with them. Align your finances with them.  Align your attention and your effort to line up with those established core values. If you are not spending your time, energy and money on the things that are important to you at your core, then you are spinning your wheels and wasting your time. I’m not asking that you necessarily share these with me, unless you just want to for accountability.  However, I do highly encourage you to share them with SOMEONE, especially your spouse or life partner, if you have one. Heck, maybe they need to do this too.

Being in balance is an awesome thing, beautiful in fact.  Yet knowledge is key.  You cannot balance your to-do list and core values if you have no clue what they even are in the first place.
