Lessons from Facebook

facebooknewsfeed

This blog post is inspired by a good friend of mine, Chelle.  You know who you are.

I believe we can take lessons from just about anything.  My friend realized some powerful lessons while washing her hair.  I decided to draw some lessons from Facebook.  I’ve been an active member of the Facebook community for about eight years now.  Even back then, I felt I was late to the party.  I’ve watched it grow and change and evolve.  Many new timelines. Some we love, some we hated. Groups were added.  Farmville died.  However; some very special relationships I have today are a result of Facebook; and for that I am eternally appreciative.

So without further adieu, here are lessons you can take from Facebook:

  1. Just because someone pokes you, doesn’t mean you have to poke them back.
  2. You do not have to attend everything you are invited to; including arguments.
  3. Apparently chain letters are still a thing, much to my dismay.
  4. Not all of your friends are actually friends.
  5. Stalkers are real, be careful.
  6. Nothing is private in social media.
  7. Everybody knows how to screen shot, don’t forget that.
  8. There is always a reason to celebrate something.
  9. It is okay to un-follow negativity.
  10. You can pray for people you’ve never met in person.
  11. You can truly love people you’ve never met in person.
  12. You can get a job because of someone you’ve never met in person.
  13. You can learn a lot about someone during elections.
  14. Everybody has an opinion and some are not afraid to use it.
  15. Yes, it is possible to OVER share.
  16. Not everything, is as it seems.
  17. Not every news story is news, or accurate.
  18. There is always more to the story.
  19. It’s okay to log off and take a break.
  20. There’s always that someone who is paying attention, even when you are sure that they are not.

So there ya have it, my musings on Facebook.   What would you add to the list ? I’d love to hear such.  Now, be a dear, and share this to Facebook, won’t ya ?  😉

Armed With Belief

underbridge

The world is not going to do your work-out for you, nor your nutrition… (such a bummer, right)!  If you want something, it is up to you. But that is a good thing, because if it were left to someone or something else to do, oh my, what if they failed? When it is left to US, we get to design our lives. Success is 100% intentional! It is also 100% “you can do it“. Believe and achieve is what I always say.

Therefore, the believing and actual achieving, well it is up to you.  Yours is anyway.  Mine is actually up to me.

Have you ever heard someone say … whether you believe you can or you can’t … you’re right? I know I have and I think there is great truth in that statement.  When my daughter was younger, if she ever said to me “I don’t think I can do this” I would respond with “well, you’re probably right then“.  She never appreciated that sentiment but now that she is a wee bit older, it clicks!

The picture above is of me standing under a bridge this past weekend.  The bridge was beautiful and it was a bright, hot day.  I had walked down a trail to get some pictures. Standing under the bridge was a nice respite ~ if ever so brief ~ from the intense bolstering sun.  I was surrounded by beauty.  So after a quick rest, I continued on my mission. What was my mission, you ask? To get pictures. My only tools were my iPhone, my eye and my energy.  This slideshow below contains some of the pictures I captured.

And if you’re still with me and want to see some additional pictures captured, here is another slideshow for your perusal.

So get up, get busy and go after your mission.  Go armed with your belief and you are half way there.  Rest when you need such.  Then get up again.

Tis the Season

4SeasonsOfDeb.jpg

No, it’s not Christmas.  I’m not even ready for Halloween.  But for everything, there is a season.  There is even a Bible verse about that. Some things are temporary; some are lifelong; some are recurring.  We have seasons of the year, seasons of parenting, seasons of life … and of course … seasons of your journey.

What journey are you on?  Do you know? What journey are you reaching for or hoping to start?  Do you have a plan?  Maybe you’re just getting started or maybe you’re in the home stretch. Maybe you’re frozen with analysis paralysis and stuck. It doesn’t matter.  Keep this in mind … what you do in one season is not necessarily the same thing you will need to do for the other seasons.  Let that sink in a bit.

Do you wear snow boots to the beach?  Do you wear a swimsuit while raking leaves? Probably not. Although it may be entertaining.  Right now, I am in a ‘maintenance’ season of my weight loss journey.  Some would say it is over, since I am a normal weight. However; it is never over.  It is a lifestyle. It is a huge compilation of a thousand habits. What I need to do for maintaining my weight is NOT the same as when I was losing. Even when I was losing, the beginning was different from the middle.

Remember:  If nothing changes, nothing changes.  I say this all of the time.  It is true though.  If you keep doing the same exercises, eating exactly the same thing, same nutrient ratios, etc. ~ you may get stuck.  The dreaded plateau.  Or heck, you may even gain.  It happens to everyone. Trust me on that.  It’s fine.  It’s normal.  It’s a season. Just. Keep. Going!  Adjust and modify as needed.  Or like Dory says, just keep swimming !

You know what else?  It’s okay to have a favorite season or not-so-favorite season. Some people love the baby stage of parenting with diapers and bottles and what not.  Some people hate that.  Some people loathe the teenage years, and some people thrive on such. Here’s the fabulous part of all of this… seasons change.

What season are you in right now?  I would love to hear your thoughts.

The Next Itty Bitty Thing

Do you realize that you are right where you need to be to take the next step? There’s absolutely nothing about your present circumstances that prevents you from making progress. All you have to decide is what to do next (just the next itty bitty step). It really is that simple. You don’t have to have it all figured out to take that next step and move forward. Just do the best you can until you know better. Once you know better, do better.

Remember: Never make permanent decisions based on temporary emotions. Many people make choices and plans when things aren’t going so well. They look for relief in the despair of the valley; instead of waiting for the clarity that comes from being on the mountaintop. . . The best time to make decisions is when you’re succeeding — or calm! If you fight your way through the valley, you’ll make better decisions at the summit.

I am pretty sure nobody is going to stand up at your funeral and state that you had an amazing couch and fabulous shoes.  Life is not about things, stuff and junk.  It’s about memories, experiences and feeling alive.  It’s about impacting other people, in a positive way.  So what is the next itty bitty thing that you need to do in order to move forward? If you don’t know the answer to that question, well figure it out.

Are You Dying?

Sometimes my kids act like they’re dying, when really they are just uncomfortable.  Adults do this too.  Truth be told, every day we live – we are technically dying – because we are one day closer to death.  Morbid thought I realize.  So while, yes, we are all technically dying … the better question is:  Are You Living ?

I found this poem and I like it a lot.  Would love your thoughts on the writing and how it relates to you and your present state of living.

You start dying slowly if you do not travel, if you do not read, If you do not listen to the sounds of life, If you do not appreciate yourself. You start dying slowly When you kill your self-esteem; When you do not let others help you. You start dying slowly If you become a slave of your habits, Walking everyday on the same paths… If you do not change your routine, If you do not wear different colours Or you do not speak to those you don’t know. You start dying slowly If you avoid to feel passion And their turbulent emotions; Those which make your eyes glisten And your heart beat fast. You start dying slowly If you do not change your life when you are not satisfied with your job, or with your love, If you do not risk what is safe for the uncertain, If you do not go after a dream, If you do not allow yourself At least once in your lifetime, To run away from sensible advice… By Pablo Neruda
