Is a Picture Worth a Thousand Words?

Have you mastered the art of the selfie?  Personally, I have not.  Not entirely sure this is a skill I need to develop at this point. Do you own a selfie stick?  I do not.  Also not entirely sure I need such a thing.

However; when you PUT yourself out there with a blog and your story … people want to see pictures.  Sometimes I have the luxury of people taking my photo.  Sometimes I do not.  Sometimes I attempt to take my own.  This usually results in me feeling like a silly fool.  Mostly this is because I am not a huge fan of posting a bunch of pics that say ‘look at me’, ‘look at me’. On the other hand, I get sweet messages from people who say they appreciate the pictures.  So I jump out of my comfort zone and attempt such things from time to time.  I still hate posing.  I would much rather have a natural picture taken, almost not even aware it is being done.

As far as weight loss, there isn’t any.  Well, not recently anyhow.  Maintenance is hard.  Don’t let anybody tell you different. Sometimes I think maintenance is harder than weight loss.  It’s a tricky science to get the nutrition balanced just right. Also, you get comfortable. Perhaps you slack off.  Then five pounds shows up out of nowhere.  Then you’re like ‘what the heck‘ and you start paying attention again.  It’s a cycle, just like in weight loss.  My clothes still fit, so this is good. More importantly still … I FEEL good.  I am healthy.  I am active.  I have energy.  I am enjoying life.  Longevity is the ultimate goal, after all.

So this is my birthday week. I will be 46 on Friday. Last year for my birthday, I had a professional photo shoot done.  To see the pictures, click here.  I do not think I will do that this year – especially since my favorite photographer up and moved away.  I don’t know, I might. We shall see.

Meanwhile, just in case I do not go for the photo shoot (which I doubt I will) … here are some pictures of me that are recent. Also note my pictures are never edited and I do not use Photoshop.  Also note; I am approximately two sizes smaller than my birthday last year. In my book, this is success.

Were These Boots Made For Walking?

Come on, sing it with me now, you know you’ve heard the song … ‘These boots were made for walking, that’s just what they’ll do, one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you!‘ … I have visions in my head of my mother singing that song and dancing around like a crazy lady in our kitchen.  Funny, I do the same thing to my kids.  Act like a crazy lady singing and dancing that is.  In public?  In the kitchen?  Hiking up a rock?  Doesn’t matter.

So let me just say, until yesterday, I had never worn boots in my life, and I am 45 years old.  I mean I probably wore snow boots as a child, but that’s about it.  I never wore riding boots or cowboy boots or fashion boots.  For one thing, I’ve always been sort of ‘function over fashion’, and for another thing — my ginormous calves never fit in boots anyway.

Even after I lost all of this weight, I still have had trouble.  I had this grand idea that now I was so much smaller, I could maybe wear these fabulous boots I see all the other moms sporting in the hood.  After several attempts and fails, I did not find any boots that would work, except of course for ankle boots.

Now I am happy to report that I am successfully wearing some very cute boots.  They fit.  I kind of feel like a rock star or something.  In the fitness world we call this an NSV (Non-Scale Victory).  On the downside; however, seeing as how I have never worn boots in my life … yowzers … I am NOT use to this, lol.  They definitely feel different than my sneakers I am normally trekking.   I even noticed my feet feeling different as I was driving. Hmmmm…. not sure I like this yet.  However; I imagine since the boots are new and the experience is new … it won’t always feel so awkward.

Regardless, it is small victories like this along the journey that just make it all the more sweeter.

NSV If You Please

Happiness is … being able to wrap a regular size bath towel around myself and properly cover up those girly treasures.  Long gone are the days of requiring a BEACH towel for such a purpose.  We have a foreign exchange student from Spain staying with us for the next few weeks; and it is nice to be able to wrap myself up in a normal towel should one of my carless children burst into my room or leave my door open in a flurry.

And speaking of NSV’s (Non-scale victories) … it is also nice to haul all of the young people downtown, and explore a new area or investigate a new coffee shop and book store … without worry about fatigue and exhaustion.

I love my city.  San Antonio boasts all sorts of interesting urban areas, natural areas, free fitness classes, a beautiful Riverwalk, family fitness events and all sorts of amazing adventures that you and your family can enjoy.  Lord knows me and my 60 toe crew often do.

For those folks anywhere near me, here is a link to all of the fun free fitness classes offered by the city of San Antonio (various locations).  This link is for the month of June, and the July schedule will be out soon.  Click Here for Class Schedule.  It will open in a new window.

As for as my endeavors to try new things … whether it be food or activity or whatever … I did try a new raspberry lemonade yesterday at the pool.  That was amazing.  The entire family loved it, like totally loved the thing.  Now I need to figure out how to make it at home.

I also discovered a new bookstore today, and purchased a fabulous hard cover called ‘The Adventurous Boy’s Handbook‘.  In my world, it is perfect.   And just prior to spending too much money at the bookstore, I tried a new dark chocolate kind of cookie, and I think it had some bit of coffee in the mix.  Verdict?  I did not really care for this concoction.  I asked the boys to take bites, they did, and they did not care for it either.  Most of that cookie ended up in the trash, but alas, we did try it, nonetheless.

So do tell, what NSV have you enjoyed lately?  What new thing, food, adventure or territory have you experienced lately?  Inspire me with your endeavors!
