Sneaky Exercise

These four pictures are of my four children … and yes I integrate fitness and a healthy lifestyle into our family life.

People ask me questions all the time about fitting in exercise when they are faced with obstacles such as time constraints, money struggles, motivation, consistency, etc.  There is no magic answer, but there are some sneaky ways to squeeze in some movement and you do NOT need a gym if that is not for you; nor in the budget.  This is the kind of blog or article you will read and pick apart.  Some of the ideas may be like a lightning bolt and you think ‘YES! I can do that’ and some you may think ‘NO WAY I would do that’ … and that is okay.  We are all sneaky in different ways 🙂  There is no one size fits all and these are just some suggestions to get your mind cranking (and your body moving).  We’ll talk about eating on a budget and the ever illusive motivation in another post.

Sneaking in exercise:

  • Don’t use the kids as an excuse – do it WITH them – or use them literally … like if you have a baby, strap that baby on your body and do some squats or push ups.  As they get bigger, toss them around, carry them around, do push ups and squats, etc.  I’ve done squats while pushing a swing at the park.
  • Instead of fast forwarding thru commercials, because let’s face it, we all record things now and fast forward thru commercials, use it as a challenge to see how many squats, crunches or push ups or lunges or whatever you can do during the commercials.  Heck, get up and run up and down your stairs if you have some during the commercials.
  • Do squats or lunges or something similar while you get ready in the morning, like while you brush your teeth, while in the shower, while blow drying your hair, etc.
  • Do leg raises or bicycle crunches while watching a show, try out some yoga poses if you like, or even stretches.
  • Do calf raises on the stairs, maybe 25 at a time, every time you have to go up or down.
  • You’ve heard it before; but park in the back of the parking lot – as long as it’s safe, to get extra steps.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator – if possible – and again – as long as it is safe.
  • Stand up when you talk on the phone.  Do some twists or stretches, or just walk/pace.
  • Dance like a maniac and crank up the music while you clean.
  • Dance like a maniac and crank up the music while you cook.
  • Have more sex with your spouse, heart racing sex and get creative and learn new things and yes I just said that. Obviously only speaking to committed stable married folks, lol.
  • If you have a dog, walk your dog.  If you dog does not do walks very well, get training.  Offer to walk someone else’s dog.  Walk with your spouse or kids.
  • If you live in a neighborhood like I do where you have to walk to a community mailbox to get your mail, as opposed to your driveway, walk a little extra.  Go around the block, go the long way.  Get in extra steps.
  • Learn how to do tricep dips – you can do them in your living room or dining room or at the kitchen table – you can do them while watching t.v.
  • Invest in some hand weights and resistance bands and learn how to do some simple strength training exercises in your living room – while watching t.v. – or listening to music, etc.
  • I have a small indoor trampoline that seriously sits right in my living room, and me and my kids jump on it all the time, while watching t.v. or not – or just on our way to the bathroom and back, it doesn’t matter.
  • Invest in a hula hoop or a jump rope – you can have all kinds of fun with exercise at home utilizing these tools.
  • If you have Netflix and have access to their online offerings; there are tons of exercise options there, so you can use your membership with Netflix to watch free exercise videos, etc.  Learn something new.
  • YouTube is a great resource to watch free exercise videos and learn something quick and fun (and new) to do at home; with the resources you have on hand.
  • If you don’t have a buddy, try to get one.  It helps tremendously with accountability and motivation.
  • Get up 10 minutes early and commit to 5 Sun Salutations ~ if you don’t know what that is or how to do them ~ google it or find an example on YouTube.
  • Take up Geocaching as a hobby with your kids/family … totally fun and physical activity and cheap.  If you don’t know what that is, google it.
  • Rearrange some furniture every now and then  – but don’t hurt yourself.
  • Dust and clean behind the refrigerator and washing machine and dryer and big ticket items that get ignored 🙂 Clean out the garage.  It is good for your house and good for your body
  • A lot of people waste time surfing the internet/Facebook on their phones, laptops, iPads, etc.  Stand up while doing these things.  You burn more calories standing up than sitting down.
  • Rediscover your love of riding a bike.
  • If nothing else, remember this:  Your body was made to bend, twist, push and pull.  Make sure your are doing all four of these activities in a day – and hopefully more than once 🙂

Fifty Shades of Black-n-White

Well I wouldn’t dare name the blog post Fifty Shades of Grey now would I?  People might talk, or get the wrong idea. Besides, that’s an entirely different conversation. 🙂

It’s New Year’s Eve.  We think of fireworks and fancy parties and traditional black and white party hats and tuxedos and what not.  Then there are those that think … Hurry up, eat all the junk food in the house.  Drink all the wine.  Get it out of your system.  Party it up hard!  Because of course; starting tomorrow, on the ever elusive January 1st, that magical day of transformation, you are going to eat perfect, and work out like a Greek Goddess.  You will have perfect portion control and macro nutrient timing down to a Science and be the envy of all the gossiping gazelles from the sidelines waiting to start their diets after the New Year’s rush dies down.  They’ll start on Monday, after the next Monday, or that next Monday, or on the first. OR – maybe they’ll start when they get paid, or when they’re not stressed, or when they feel better, or when they look better, or when they have more money or when the junk food is gone or when the in-laws aren’t visiting or when they find themselves at the next New Year’s Eve party swearing off resolutions because they never work but promise to get rid of the pounds that crept up over the last decade of failed starts.

I wonder what the buzz words will be THIS year?  Will it be clean eating or Paleo or Whole Foods or Cross Fit or Gluten Free or Vegan or what?  None of those things are bad in and of themselves unless you’re just using it as another band wagon to jump on ~ so that when it fades you can fall off and call it a fad, that was never meant to be.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with starting something new, with a new year or a new week, or even a new day … but with that, you must start it with a new mindset.  Why are you doing this? Is it a lifestyle?  Or is this some silly tradition or gimmick or cool kids’ table sorority initiation type thing? Well hey, all the OTHER mamas are doing Paleo, so I should too, right?  Um, not really.

First of all; stop assigning emotional value to food.  There are not good foods and bad foods.  Food is food.  It should be fuel for your body, period.  Some food will fuel you better than others.   Some food will make you feel like crap; well that’s a given.  Try not to beat yourself up and turn that into this whole diatribe about how you’re a horrible person because you ate a bag of chips that gave you diarrhea and made you feel like poop – LITERALLY.  So, um, okay – chips are not good fuel. Move on.  Some people swear by broccoli.  Well, that doesn’t work for me.  I can’t eat that.  If I eat broccoli, I get very ill. That is not good fuel for Deb.  That is very BAD fuel for Deb – but not in the world of fitness and clean eating per se. Everyone hails broccoli like it’s a God or something.  Not in my world.  Thus is my point. Eat for YOUR body, not your neighbor’s.  Eyes on your own plate people.  Not everything is black and white.

The rules are sketchy and grey and ever-changing.  Why?  Because the only rules that matter are the rules that apply to you and your body and your health and lifestyle. Of course there are general ones that apply to most; and some general Science and Nutrition standards … but guess what … your body will change.  Yup.  It changes all the dang time.  As I’ve become smaller; my rules have changed.  I can’t do the same thing or eat the same way, I have to adapt.  My body changes, the rules change. My workouts have to change.  I’ve got to pay attention.  That is why I can’t just jump on every silly band wagon hippy fad magazine hype that hits the airwaves as if they’re the magic ticket.   People come to me for advice all of the time.  That’s awesome. I’m happy to do it; but all I’m really going to do is ask you a boat load of questions to get to the heart of YOU.  One of two things happen:  The person gets excited and answers the questions and takes action – – or they disappear.  That’s fine, that means they were either ready or they were not.  No worries, I’m not going anywhere.  For those who are ready … I’m here. In the meantime; Happy New Year.

Happy New Year

The Gratitude Challenge

MasonJars

Any ole jar will do

Gratitude Challenge: Are you in?

You Will Need:

  1. A Jar – It doesn’t matter what kind of jar. Recycled jelly jar, mason jar, etc.
  2. Some Paper – you can pick something colorful or you can rip out some white lined paper from a notebook, or you can write on the back of junk mail, it doesn’t matter.
  3. A Pen/pencil/marker that you can easily find.

What You Will Do:

Each day, starting on January 1, 2015, think of things that made you happy. This can include goals, dreams and desires. You can focus on anything as long as it makes you think of happiness! If you want to put other things in the jar, like a lucky token, ticket stub from a trip you loved or a note from a loved one, go ahead. It’s your jar and your fulfillment. You can add more than one things a day.

Write it Down!

There are no set “rules”, modify this as it works best for your world. So throw out your thoughts about prayers, good luck, well wishes and/or faith-based understandings of happiness.   Maybe it’s a question or prayer request.  Whatever you choose to write; just make sure it makes you think of happiness, or brings joy.

You will do this for one full year.  Then on New Year’s Eve (12/31/15) – – you will celebrate all of the things you wrote about.

Now who is with me?

As always, make champion choices,
The Healthy Habit Lady
