Which Song Would You Pick?

An oldie but a goodie to welcome in September …

Welcome September

Welcome to September

Which Song Would You Pick?
By: Debra Higginbotham
(yeah that’s me)

I’m sneakers and t-shirts, and boots now and then.
No use for high heels … probably invented by men.

I’m proactive, not reactive – I’m loud when I laugh.
I can’t manage laundry; but I have managed a staff.

I’m goofy, I’m silly … but don’t fall down on the job,
or I’ll grow grumpy horns, to make a grown man sob.

I’m happy and optimistic with my head held high…
but if you whine and complain, I’ll bid you goodbye.

Lazy drives me crazy. Moochers, just leave me be.
I’m a no-drama Mama … with no time for hypocrisy!

I’m honest. I’m blunt. Why beat around the bush?
And if you’re stuck in a rut, just call me for a push.

I’m witty. I’m friendly – and I read people well.
So if you are not authentic – I most surey can tell.

I’m not a Betty Crocker, or Martha Stewart wannabe,
but I was never one to master that Housewifery !

I’m not one for debates. Cat fights aren’t my thing.
I find those gossiping gazelles, just oh so exhausting.

I don’t really drink coffee, and I barely like wine.
Yet somehow, all these years, I do just fine.

I hate shopping malls.  I’d rather hike a hill.
But don’t ask me to race.  I doubt I ever will.

My socks rarely match.  My nails are often plain.
And I’ve been known ~ to dance in the rain.

I compliment strangers; and oh how I sing off key.
But not at the same time, I fear they may slap me.

I rarely talk politics – but I will always cast a vote.
And I will speak my mind – even IF it rocks the boat.

So now that you know – a few things that make me tick,
if we were going to dance … which song would you pick?

I Do The Thing …

Do you love it or hate it when people ask you ‘What do you do?”   I think I am neutral on that question, even though it seems to have many answers … at least in my head.

So – What do I do ?  Well, let’s see.

I do the blog thing obviously, here, this post you’re reading is obviously part of my blog.

I do the fitness thing and I’ve lost over 175 pounds while battling a disorder called SED. You can look it up if you like or see a post here.

I do the marriage thing and have been doing it for over a couple of decades.

I do the mom thing and adore my sixty toe family.

I do the camping thing every chance possible. Texas State Parks are awesome.

I do the swimming thing anywhere and everywhere, any time of year.

I do the poetry thing, but not nearly as often as I use to, or as often as I probably should.

I do the cooking thing, but not all that great, more out of necessity, but I am learning and evolving.  I enjoy gadgets like my Vitamix, Kitchen Aid mixer and soda stream thingy.

I do the volunteering thing and teach my kids to do the same.

I do the voting thing but won’t go into Politics on the internet or social media.

I do the Facebook thing here. I do the Twitter thing here. I do the Pinterest thing here. I do the Instagram thing here. (But not nearly as much as I probably should) Also, I do the LinkedIN thing here. All professional ya know.

and last but never least …

I do the Jesus thing with every fiber of my heart, mind, soul, body and spirit ~ and I worship at Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit.

Meanwhile … next week … I am doing the MOVING thing.  No, the blog isn’t moving.  My family is moving into a brand new house, new construction.  New neighborhood.  New appliances.  We have moved a LOT in our marriage, but this should be the final move for quite some time.  Does it make me geeky that I am giddy excited about a new fridge and gourmet kitchen?  Who cares, I’m squealing over here.

So now it is your turn.  What do YOU do ?

Housewifery

Confession:  I suck at housewifery.  Yes, I totally made up that word.  How is it possible that I was once able to run an entire organization, write training manuals and teach database design… yet I cannot seem to keep up with laundry?  I’d blame it on the four children that have invaded my brain power, but honestly, I sucked at laundry before I ever had kids.

Suzie Homemaker I am not.  Betty Crocker, not even close.  I can read. I can follow instructions. Therefore, I can follow a recipe and usually produce something edible, but it is usually out of necessity, not pleasure.  I will never be one of those folks who make up decadent dishes and experiment in the kitchen and cherish the thought of home-made pies.  Yeah, not me at all.  Buy me some pumpkin bread from Starbucks and I am thrilled.  We can bond over a little green straw in my frappe.

I also believe that Pinterest is going to be the death of me. I see all those amazing photos of clever moms with their perfectly orchestrated lunches with properly balanced nutrition …. and here I am jumping up and down because I actually remembered to put money on their cafeteria accounts.  I see images of organized closets and cute book shelves, and back pack areas neatly planned for shoes and what not.  Here I am thrilled if the door to the coat/shoe closet is actually closed.

I actually do have a job:  a part-time job I work from home.  I work for a non-profit organization dealing with foreign exchange students.  The pay is minimal, but it keeps me from focusing on dust bunnies and beds that should be made.  It gives me flexibility, which when all is said and done, is what I need.  Not flexibility to do morning yoga poses (although I probably should) … but flexibility to be the one who sits in the carpool lane and picks up my fabulous children from their elementary school.  ALL three of them.  It also gives me the flexibility to homeschool my teenage daughter … because public school would be the death of her spirit for sure.

So, while I may suck at housewifery, I love the mom part of it all.  I love hearing about their day, stressin’ over homework and teaching Algebra.  Well, not really, but let’s just pretend that part is true. I love playing with my kids, and exercising with them and wearing them out.  I love putting them to bed at night and praying for them constantly. I don’t scrapbook very well, but I do silly and fun like a genius. I get in the water. I go down the slide. I go tubing in the river. I laugh at their jokes and gush at their art. I may suck at finding all the Chess pieces, but I am great at finding TIME.  I may suck at making pancakes, but I am great at making mini-van memories. I never went to nursing school but I can kiss a boo boo with the best of them.  I’ll never be the crafty super mom who plans meals a month in advance, but I’ll definitely make sure they don’t starve to death.

So if you come over to my house and step on a Lego, please don’t sue me.  I’ll pay for you to get a foot massage and buy you a Starbucks.  And as we open our little green straws … I’ll smile and giggle about how much I love being a mom.
