Tis the Season

4SeasonsOfDeb.jpg

No, it’s not Christmas.  I’m not even ready for Halloween.  But for everything, there is a season.  There is even a Bible verse about that. Some things are temporary; some are lifelong; some are recurring.  We have seasons of the year, seasons of parenting, seasons of life … and of course … seasons of your journey.

What journey are you on?  Do you know? What journey are you reaching for or hoping to start?  Do you have a plan?  Maybe you’re just getting started or maybe you’re in the home stretch. Maybe you’re frozen with analysis paralysis and stuck. It doesn’t matter.  Keep this in mind … what you do in one season is not necessarily the same thing you will need to do for the other seasons.  Let that sink in a bit.

Do you wear snow boots to the beach?  Do you wear a swimsuit while raking leaves? Probably not. Although it may be entertaining.  Right now, I am in a ‘maintenance’ season of my weight loss journey.  Some would say it is over, since I am a normal weight. However; it is never over.  It is a lifestyle. It is a huge compilation of a thousand habits. What I need to do for maintaining my weight is NOT the same as when I was losing. Even when I was losing, the beginning was different from the middle.

Remember:  If nothing changes, nothing changes.  I say this all of the time.  It is true though.  If you keep doing the same exercises, eating exactly the same thing, same nutrient ratios, etc. ~ you may get stuck.  The dreaded plateau.  Or heck, you may even gain.  It happens to everyone. Trust me on that.  It’s fine.  It’s normal.  It’s a season. Just. Keep. Going!  Adjust and modify as needed.  Or like Dory says, just keep swimming !

You know what else?  It’s okay to have a favorite season or not-so-favorite season. Some people love the baby stage of parenting with diapers and bottles and what not.  Some people hate that.  Some people loathe the teenage years, and some people thrive on such. Here’s the fabulous part of all of this… seasons change.

What season are you in right now?  I would love to hear your thoughts.

The Canyon Sting

Deb1

Well, I got stung by a bee in a canyon.  I do not think I have been stung by a bee in decades and it was not entirely pleasant.  However; I was in nature ~ surrounded by beauty ~ and I did NOT let it derail my outdoor activity or steal my joy.

Do you know people who let one bad thing ruin the whole event?  Or heck, even several bad things?  I know I do.  Sometimes it’s somewhat justified and sometimes it’s beyond ridiculous.  Guess what, things will go wrong.  You will get uncomfortable.  You will need something you don’t have.  You will get lost.  You will get sweaty.  You will be tired.

This just names a few possibilities.

Tell me; how is your attitude when things go awry?  Can you laugh at yourself.  Let me tell you something, learning to laugh at yourself and your circumstances is truly a beautiful thing.  Trust me.

Yes, I was in a canyon.  Yes, I got stung by a bee.  Yes, I even got rained on in my hiking adventures.  No, I did not let it ruin my day.  Not even a little tiny bit.

Here are a few pictures from my adventure in Palo Duro Canyon State Park.  You can click the link but here is a sneak peak.

Popeye Is Not My Friend

PopeyesFood

Today, my boys begged me for food from Popeye’s.  In case you’re not familiar, it is a fried chicken fast food chain.   I gave in, I agreed.  Big mistake. Huge.

Here’s the thing I find ironic.  I barely had a few bites of this food, and it made me horribly ill.  However; there was a time .. many moons ago … that I used to love this place.  I did indeed LOVE that chicken from Popeye’s.  Come on, you know you sang the commercial with me just now.  The biscuits, oh my.  The mashed potatoes, heaven.  The chicken – well it was my fav.  Not anymore.  Not only did this food today make me sick, it literally made my insides hurt.

Please don’t miss my point here.  It is not to bash Popeye’s.  My children did not get sick. This is not a bad restaurant.  My point is this:  Know your body.  Once you change your lifestyle, and your body becomes accustomed to certain things, or unaccustomed, it’s hard to enjoy it like you used to do.  I cannot eat this stuff anymore.  I just can’t.  Not everyone is like me, some people can go years without a certain food and then eat it again, and be  just fine.  My body is not wired that way.   My stomach rebelled in a bad fit today and let me know in no uncertain terms, this food is not welcomed.

So when you know better, but do something anyway, be prepared for the consequences. That is pretty much true in all of life, I dare say.  I knew better.  I knew I had not eaten this stuff in a very long time for a darn good reason.  I did it anyway.  Yikes.  Now here I am swearing I will never do this again.  But the truth is, I might, and I probably will.  Although it may be a good long while.  And if I do, the consequences will likely be similar.

Now tell me, is there a food or something you used to adore and inhale but now makes you hurl?  I’d love to hear your take on this.

The Next Itty Bitty Thing

Do you realize that you are right where you need to be to take the next step? There’s absolutely nothing about your present circumstances that prevents you from making progress. All you have to decide is what to do next (just the next itty bitty step). It really is that simple. You don’t have to have it all figured out to take that next step and move forward. Just do the best you can until you know better. Once you know better, do better.

Remember: Never make permanent decisions based on temporary emotions. Many people make choices and plans when things aren’t going so well. They look for relief in the despair of the valley; instead of waiting for the clarity that comes from being on the mountaintop. . . The best time to make decisions is when you’re succeeding — or calm! If you fight your way through the valley, you’ll make better decisions at the summit.

I am pretty sure nobody is going to stand up at your funeral and state that you had an amazing couch and fabulous shoes.  Life is not about things, stuff and junk.  It’s about memories, experiences and feeling alive.  It’s about impacting other people, in a positive way.  So what is the next itty bitty thing that you need to do in order to move forward? If you don’t know the answer to that question, well figure it out.

Are You Dying?

Sometimes my kids act like they’re dying, when really they are just uncomfortable.  Adults do this too.  Truth be told, every day we live – we are technically dying – because we are one day closer to death.  Morbid thought I realize.  So while, yes, we are all technically dying … the better question is:  Are You Living ?

I found this poem and I like it a lot.  Would love your thoughts on the writing and how it relates to you and your present state of living.

You start dying slowly if you do not travel, if you do not read, If you do not listen to the sounds of life, If you do not appreciate yourself. You start dying slowly When you kill your self-esteem; When you do not let others help you. You start dying slowly If you become a slave of your habits, Walking everyday on the same paths… If you do not change your routine, If you do not wear different colours Or you do not speak to those you don’t know. You start dying slowly If you avoid to feel passion And their turbulent emotions; Those which make your eyes glisten And your heart beat fast. You start dying slowly If you do not change your life when you are not satisfied with your job, or with your love, If you do not risk what is safe for the uncertain, If you do not go after a dream, If you do not allow yourself At least once in your lifetime, To run away from sensible advice… By Pablo Neruda
